Varicose Veins are veins that become abnormally swollen and large, usually due to defective valves in the vein that cause blood to pool. They often appear on the leg and may protrude from the surface of the skin. Varicose veins can lead to symptoms such as pain, swelling, leg heaviness and fatigue, and skin ulcers.
When larger veins fail, they are typically called varicose veins.
When smaller veins are affected, they are typically called spider veins.
The presence of varicose veins is influenced by a variety of factors, including:
- age
- gender
- family history
- heavy lifting
- multiple pregnancies
- obesity
- professions with prolonged standing/sitting
Heredity is the number one contributing factor causing varicose and spider veins.
In addition, women are more likely to suffer from abnormal leg veins. Since females usually have multiple risk factors for the development of varicose veins, about three fourths of the persons who have varicose veins are women and 25% are men.
A skin ulcer is a shallow wound on the surface of the skin. Untreated varicose veins may cause venous skin ulcers on the lower leg, due to the leakage of blood from the faulty vein building up in the surrounding tissue. These ulcers are painful and difficult to heal, and may never fully go away if the blood flow in the vein is not corrected.
Spider veins are dilated capillaries that appear as small, thread-like lines on the surface of the skin. They are commonly found on the lower legs and thighs, and are often blue, red, or purple in color. Smaller spider veins may even appear on the face (see: facial veins). Many individuals want to get rid of these unattractive veins for cosmetic reasons, but they may also have symptoms like itching, burning, or discoloration.
Spider veins are influenced by the same factors for varicose veins, such as: heredity, age, occupations with prolonged standing/sitting, obesity, and gender. Spider veins are much more common in women than men because the condition is directly affected by hormonal factors including puberty, pregnancy, menopause, the use of birth control pills, estrogen, and progesterone.
Initially, a diagnostic ultrasound exam will be performed to determine the cause and severity of the vein problem, and to decide which treatment option is best for you. This exam is specifically referred to as the venous duplex examination, and allows the physician to see the anatomy and check the flow characteristics of veins beneath the skin. The information is then used to diagnose the specific vein issue and to plan and guide treatment accordingly.
There are two general treatment options: conservative measures like compression stockings and herbal treatments; or corrective measures, such as sclerotherapy, endovenous radiofrequency ablation, laser/light source treatment, or surgery. In most cases, a combination of treatment methods is recommended.
Each case is different, depending on the cause and severity of the vein problem. Certain treatments like sclerotherapy often require several sessions for best results. More invasive treatments like phlebectomy or endovenous RF ablation are usually one-time procedures.
Following all of our vein treatments, there is little or no downtime. Patients can often resume normal activities the same day, and return to work the next day.
Sclerotherapy is a quick, safe, and effective treatment for varicose and spider veins. A tiny needle is used to inject the veins with a unique type of chemical, called sclerosant, that irritates the lining of the vein. In response, the veins collapse, seal shut, and are reabsorbed by the body.
Each treatment session usually take under an hour and patients can return to regular activities as soon as they leave the office.
