What are spider veins?
pider veins are like smaller varicose veins, closer to the surface of the skin. They are red or blue in color and have a branch or web-like appearance, and usually found on the legs or sometimes face. Often these spiders are fed by larger vessels, called reticular or "feeder" veins.
Spider veins may cause symptoms like itching, burning, or pain.
What causes spider veins?
Spider veins are influenced by the same factors for varicose veins, such as:
- heredity
- age
- occupations with prolonged standing/sitting
- obesity
- gender
Spider veins are much more common in women than men because the condition is directly affected by hormonal factors including puberty, pregnancy, menopause, the use of birth control pills, estrogen, and progesterone.
How are spider veins treated?
The most popular treatment option for spider veins is sclerotherapy, which is usually done through several sessions of injections.
